Depending on which job you aim to get, qualifications are not always required in IT, but having certain credentials makes you a more competitive job candidate. You'll usually need a qualification and several years' appropriate experience to get started in IT management. It's better if your qualification is in an IT-based subject or is from company training IT courses with some technical factor (like arithmetic or engineering).

There may be some job opportunities if you don't have a qualification but have experience which shows you have gradually taken on more responsibility for growth as well as of projects.

Some IT managers come from another background and have performed in another market before moving into IT.

One credential that organisations are ideally looking for is PRINCE2 (Projects in Controlled Environments).

It's not essential but it looks excellent on your CV if you have it. Don't worry if you don't as some organisations will enrol you on IT courses.

As an IT manager or consultant, your company should make sure your IT courses training is a mix of company and technical capabilities.

IT courses will therefore depend on how you get started in the marketplace and whether you need to focus on the IT courses or business skills.

If, like most people, you have an IT courses background and have progressed up the career steps there are some IT project qualifications available Association of Project Management (APM) and the Information Systems Examinations Board (ISEB). If your work needs you overseas then the Project Management Organization (PMI) functions great programs.
