What is E-learning and online training?

E-learning allows you to do online training anywhere and usually whenever they want, provided that you have a computer, laptop, tablet, TV, or smartphone devices that are compatible with the online training software.

E-learning can be CD-ROM or DVD-based, network-based, intranet or Internet-based. It can consist of text, movie, sound, computer animation and 3D modelling.  Online learning on an online course can provide the opportunity to learn with a level of excitement and interest you might encounter in a populated class setting. You decide how quickly you get through the online training because online learning is self-paced, with you in control of time.

The quality of an online course depends on its content and its effective distribution. E-learning can suffer from many of the same stumbling blocks as studying in a classroom, such as tedious powerpoint shows, lacklustre conversation, and little chance of tutor connections. The advantage of e-learning, however, is that new applications allow the creation of ever more effective online training programmes that can immerse you in the online learning material.

Different forms and levels of e-learning, online learning and online course

E-learning can be simply put into four groups, from the simple to the advanced. The groups are:

Information directories -- While not necessarily seen as actual online training, these directories are the most primary way of e-learning. Information directories on websites offer lists of information which can help you with guidance on specific subjects, along with step-by-step guides for completing particular projects.

Online assistance -- Online assistance is also a way of e-learning and functions in the same way to information directories. Online assistance comes by means of chat-rooms, blogs, forums, e-mail, or instant-messaging. Online learning in this way is a little bit more entertaining than information directories; online assistance offers the chance of more interactive online training, as well as more immediate solutions.

Asynchronous online course -- This is e-learning in its most common form of online training. On online course will include self-paced studying, either CD-ROM-based, Network-based, Intranet-based or Internet-based. It may consist of access to teachers through online course boards, online conversation groups and e-mail. Or, it may be totally self-contained with links to online learning reference materials instead of a live trainer.

Synchronous online course -- Synchronous online training is done in real-time with a live trainer assisting the online learning session. Everyone in the class logs in to the learning software at a specific time to connect directly with the trainer and with each other. You can raise your online hand and even view the online white board. This kind of online course occurs via webinar, video conferencing, Skype or one to one video link.
